We took a bus from Lijiang to the small village of Baisha,
about 20mins away to the north.

The bus dropped us on the main road, so it was a long, windy and dusty walk to
the village along a road with great views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
(above left). When we eventually got to Baisha, the first thing we saw were
these racks of sliced bean jelly drying in the sun. Bean jelly is a popular Naxi
dish - we tried some - it was, well, unusual, not really to our liking...bland
and...er...jelly-like.

Baisha itself is a lovely place, very relaxed and uncommercialised after the
hectic pace and crowds of Lijiang. Here (above) is the wide, paved main street
(bean jelly stall on left). We had a wander round, soaked up the atmosphere, and
found a place to sit down for a coffee.

There were plenty of Naxi women in their distinctive blue and white traditional
dress. We'd hoped to visit the famous Baisha frescoes, but Freda started to
become uncharacteristically listless, complaining of nausea, so we found a taxi
and beat a hasty retreat to our guesthouse in Lijiang. She perked up later
in the day.
