Cicada

Katydid Cockroach Butterfly & Moth Spider Wasp & Bee Cicada Praying Mantis Mosquito

This is a Cicada, the LOUDEST insect in the world! One of the students climbed a tree next to the basketball courts to get it for Freda. It hung around on her hand for half an hour, chirping every so often, then flew off into another tree. Cicadas spend years (sometimes as many as 17) underground as nymphs, then hatch out for as little as 5 weeks as breeding adults. Only the male makes the chirping noise - it's a mating call. A cicada has 7 eyes (one on each side of its head and a cluster of 5 on top).

There is a cicada called Fred
Who at night never goes to his bed
He makes such a racket
We really can't hack it
So I do rather wish he was dead
