Butterfly & Moth |
|
Moths can distinguished from butterflies because their antennae often have hairs or look featherlike. They also, generally, rest with their wings outspread rather than together as do butterflies. Like butterflies, moths feed by sucking nectar or other plant juices from flowers. But they only fly at night. We have lots of moths around our flat (at some times of year) because they are attracted to the bright spotlight that shines down from above our kitchen window. They rest on the outside walls and lay their eggs in little clusters. Moths have a very sensitive sense of smell. Some can detect a mate at over a kilometre distance. The big brown hairy moth in our pictures looks a bit like a leaf when it is resting - this is a disguise to prevent it being eaten by birds. It doesn't prevent them being spotted by little girls though...
