Out and About in Simao County

Simao is a small place and it's easy to get out into the countryside - often a
15 minute cycle or a short local bus journey is enough. Here the pace of life is
much slower, living conditions are basic, and the people are incredibly
friendly. More than once we have been invited into a farmer's home to share
their lunch. We sometimes moan about the insensitive rudeness of the more
affluent people we come into contact with in town but out here in rural Yunnan
things are very different!
Here are a selection of trips that we've made into the countryside
around the town. All, except Da Lu Shan, are day excursions.

Cycling
We try to get out on our bikes as much as we can. Although the
bus services are great you definitely see more on the bike and we've discovered
some great wee local spots. Bike repair shops are everywhere in town, so we tend
to head to one of these even for something like a drop of oil on the chain or
pumping up a tyre!

bike (left); a typical local pannier, used to carry just about anything,
including chickens, vegetables, wood, even children (centre); cycling through Xi
Ma He (Wash Horse River) tea plantations with our friend Paul Hider (right).
